Bruz - Rennes is a 118 km, division D race starting in Bruz, France. It started with a long flat road going through the French countryside. towards the middle of the stage, the penultimate climb begins. It is 5 kms long with an average gradient of 12%. The peleton is expected to break up here. After the penultimat climb a short technical downhill route will lead towards a very hilly area of France. This part, being around the city is expected to attract many fans. After the Hills, the riders will ride back into French countryside where they will go on another technical descent. After the descent, the race ends on a short 2 km climb to the finish.
Right after the race begins, 7 riders broke away before the 72 rider peleton had even rode 5 km. The strongest man in the group, the solid Chinese rider, Mai Qi of Agis posed the greatest threat to the peleton. The breakaway also consisted of Gerald Osgood (speedyb), Desmond Makal (Fanny), Dermont Wyeth (Team Banesto), Des nuetze (Britcycles), Frode Hassel (Fanny), and Brian Hare (Team Guiness).
The very strong breakaway group did not appear well to the peleton at all. Speedyb and OcaƱa were forced to do most of the workload in order stay within reach of the breakaway because both teams had the 2 favorites as captains. Agis, one of the strongest teams riding the race, did not have to work at all due to Mai qi being in the break. As the Breakaway group began the climb, it was evident three riders were better off than the rest. The Englisman Dermont Wyeth, Mai Qi, and Desmond Makal dropped the other breakaway riders as the toughest part of the climb neared. Off the back, the injured team mate of Landon Tolman, Darrell Wheatly, quickly fell back not able to keep up. speedyb, struggling up front, was now reinforced by Osgood who had dropped back from the breakaway. The leading 3 riders had now 4 minutes on the peleton as they rode over the top. The peleton speed up as Daioni soon took over in order to help their captain, Emidio Simones. After speeding Downhill, the persitant breakaway finally started losing speed but all they had to do was reach the final downhill and the breakaway would likely succeed. However, downhill specialist, Landon Tolman, and his teammate Elias Shippy free wheeled away from the peleton. When reaching the hills, Shippy rode his heart out in order to give his captain the biggest gap possible. Once reaching the hills, the race favorites attacked out of the peleton. The original breakaway group of 3 riders faltered when Shippy and Tolman whizzed past them on the 3rd to last downhill. Finally, Tolman let Shippy go at 10 kms. Its was now only a 2 minute gap between the group of race favorites and the alone Tolman. However, on the final climb, Tolman managed to give just enough to beat out the youngsters in their best form. Tolman has ended the winless drought for Speedyb.
